George Meade Room

Located just off the Great Room, an addition to the Inn completed in 1970, the General George Meade Room offers a comfortable and inviting retreat filled with historic charm. The room features a luxurious king-size bed, a private bathroom, complimentary Wi-Fi, a Roku TV, and convenient access to the Inn's common areas.

The room's design draws inspiration from Spanish Colonial style, reflecting Meade's Spanish heritage, his engineering accomplishments, and his distinguished military career. Rich textures, warm tones, and refined furnishings honor his early life in Spain, while nautical and architectural details celebrate his work as an engineer responsible for some of America's most iconic lighthouse projects. Equestrian accents pay tribute to his beloved Civil War horse, Old Baldy, who carried Meade through many of the war's most significant moments.

About Major General George Gordon Meade

Major General George Gordon Meade (1815–1872) was born in Cádiz, Spain, into a prominent military family. After returning to the United States, he attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and developed a reputation as both a skilled engineer and military leader.

Before the Civil War, Meade played an important role in the development of America's coastal defenses. As an Army engineer, he directed the construction and improvement of several important lighthouses, including Brandywine Shoal Lighthouse, Sand Key Light, Jupiter Inlet Light, Sombrero Key Light, Barnegat Light, Absecon Light, and Cape May Light. He also led the Great Lakes Survey mission beginning in 1857, overseeing important mapping and surveying work on Lakes Huron and Michigan.

Just three days before the Battle of Gettysburg, Meade was appointed commander of the Army of the Potomac. He arrived after the first day of fighting on July 1, 1863, and quickly took command during one of the most critical battles in American history. Through careful decisions, strong leadership, and effective use of his commanders—including Major Generals John F. Reynolds and Winfield S. Hancock—Meade successfully organized the Union defense.

During the battle's final day, Meade's forces withstood General Robert E. Lee's devastating assault on the Union center, known as Pickett's Charge, resulting in a decisive Union victory.

Following Gettysburg, Meade faced criticism for not aggressively pursuing Lee's retreating army. President Abraham Lincoln believed Meade's cautious approach allowed the Confederate forces to escape, and Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant later accompanied Meade during the remaining campaigns of the war.

After the Civil War, Meade continued his service to the nation, overseeing military districts during Reconstruction. He later commanded the Military Division of the Atlantic and the Department of the South, helping guide several Southern states through the process of rejoining the Union.
